If you have a
program, ministry or idea,
that helps or improves
the community
you can receive major funding to
make a greater impact
My name is Tracy. J Brown, founder of Urban Awareness USA a nationally recognized 501c3 nonprofit organization that works closely with faith-based and community organizations. Since 2003 Urban Awareness USA has helped faith-based organizations across the United States obtain and manage millions of dollars in public and private funding to improve their communities.
In addition to helping faith-based organizations obtain funding for outreach ministry and community programs, we have also helped organization build affordable housing, private schools, senior living facilities, and economic development opportunities for their communities.
I have also been blessed to work on the international level. My favorite, most memorable experience was a government funded project that proposed construction of 1,100 homes in a community in Benne, Africa.
My work with the urban faith-based community
has reviled one painfully obvious truth...
There are billions of dollars available to help faith-based organizations provide services and outreach ministry to their communities; but, less than 5% of all faith-based organizations will actually apply to obtain the funds!
Of those select few organizations that do actually apply for funding, very few serve African-American and other minority communities. Why do you think that is? Why is so little funding going to areas that most desperately need it? Why is it that so much of the funding goes unclaimed and unapplied for?
It’s because urban faith-based organizations have been misinformed about what’s available and how the process really works. In addition to misinformation, many urban faith-based groups lack the administrative and organizational capacity to be awarded funding.
To help resolve these major challenges, we developed a four step empowerment plan to help any faith-based organization:
- Obtain funding for ministry growth and development
- Impact your surrounding community with ministry and programming
- Improve the collective wealth of your community
- Improve the education standards in your community
Faith Based & Community Initiatives
In this day of uncertain economic times and devastating social challenges in the urban communities, it’s the job of the U.S. Government to help stimulate growth and development in urban America. In 2001, the U.S. Government launched its office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. This office was specifically designed to help faith-based organizations tap into government funding to help solve many of the social problems plaguing our country. Most recently in 2009, President Obama expanded the office of FBCI which underscores the historic commitment the government has made to urban America. Therefore, it’s clear that money is readily available to help solve many of the challenges facing urban America.
Problems facing urban America

It’s well documented that the African American community ranks highest in almost every area of social and economic degradation.
Socially
- 42% of black high school students will drop out compared to 15% of white high school students
- 13% of black women ages 15 – 19 will become pregnant, compared to 4% of whites
- Statistically, a black male under 21 is arrested every minute
- Based on current rates of first incarceration, an estimated 32% of black males will enter State or Federal prison during their lifetime, compared to 5.9% of white males
- More black males are in prison than college
- Black America HIV rate exceeds that of Haiti, Rwanda, and Guyana COMBINED
Economically
- Unemployment rate is nearly twice the national average
- In cities like New York, 48% of black males ages 16 – 65 are unemployed, compared to 25% of white males
- 48% of middle class are home owners compared to 71% of white families with similar income.
- Family net worth is 1/10 that of the average white family
- 500% more likely to file bankruptcy
Who can solve these problems?
Faith-Based organizations are and have always been, best positioned to bring change to America’s communities. Historically speaking, the African American church in particular, has successfully navigated its people through slavery, post slavery, Jim Crow, civil rights, post civil rights, etc. Participating (at some level) in nearly every major social and economic advancement in urban American over the past 100 years, the church is the most qualified organization to lead urban America through its current social and economic challenges.
If you are an active faith-based organization, you most likely have existing ministries and outreach programs that may be eligible to receive public or private funding. Does your organization have programming that help one of the following groups:
